You’ll be surrounded by a variety of foods, but will you be able to enjoy them? Dentures have undergone several improvements over the years to enhance their fit and function, but you might notice some limitations. There isn’t any reason to avoid your favorite summer dishes. Here are 5 helpful tips to eat delicious meals and treats.

1. Choose softer foods first.

If you know you’ll be eating with friends or family, it’s best to stick to softer foods for a few days leading up to the event. You don’t want your gums to feel sore or tender, which is common if you’ve recently received new dentures. You can reduce your risk of discomfort during the adjustment period by choosing applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal, and other soft foods.

2. Be careful with hot foods.

Although your dentures are made of durable material, they are no match for excessive heat. Whether you’re sitting around the campfire with hot cocoa or enjoying your favorite tea, consume hot foods and liquids with caution. Not only can you burn the soft tissues in your mouth, but it can also cause your denture to warp.

3. Cut food into small pieces.

Nothing is more embarrassing than your teeth falling out while you’re eating. You can save yourself from embarrassment by ensuring you’re not biting off more than you can chew. Your dentist recommends cutting your food into smaller pieces to avoid putting strain on your gums, jaw, or dentures. This is especially important if you’re eating anything that requires a lot of chewing, like meat or raw vegetables.

4. Stay hydrated.

Many summer foods contain starches and sugar, like potato chips, hot dog buns, and ice cream. Harmful bacteria can cling to your dentures, which can cause odors and damage. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help cleanse your dentures between brushing and soaking them. Not to mention, you’ll stay hydrated to beat the heat.

5. Choose your meats carefully.

Summer is the ideal time for grilled meats, but they can be difficult to chew. Until you adjust to your dentures, you may want to avoid steak and ribs. Slow-cooked and ground meats are usually easier to chew. If you can’t skip a big T-bone, cut your meat into small pieces.

Make the Most of Summer

Even though your dentures aren’t your real teeth, you don’t have to miss out on summer fun. If you’re interested in enjoying a close replica of your natural teeth, ask your dentist about adding the stability of dental implants to your denture.
