How Long Will My Dental Implants Last?

They say nothing lasts forever, but when it comes to dental implants, we’ve got good news! While tooth prosthetics like dentures may need to be replaced every five to ten years, dental implants can last significantly longer. Here’s what you can expect from yours!

The Life Expectancy of Dental Implants

Dental implants are comprised of three main parts: the implant, the abutment, and the crown. The dental implant itself is a metal screw (usually titanium) that adheres to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Once this is complete, you can expect your implant to remain in place for a lifetime with proper care.

The abutment and crown, on the other hand, may last up to 20 years with regular maintenance and depending on the types of foods you eat, as hard foods like nuts, crackers, or crunching on ice may cause them to wear down over time.

The Long-Term Financial Benefits of Dental Implants

While dental implants are certainly a significant initial investment, thanks to their durability, comfort, and convenience, they are often a better financial choice than less expensive, less permanent options. While a full set of traditional dentures could cost you around $3,000, that expense becomes much higher if they need replacement every five years.

Conversely, implant crowns and abutments can last several times longer, so you won’t need to replace them as often, saving you money over time.

How Do I Extend the Life of My Dental Implants?

If you’ve made the decision to get dental implants, you probably want to protect your investment. Thankfully, there are measures you can take to extend their life for as long as possible:

  • Brush your dental implants just as you would your natural teeth, at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes
  • Floss between all your teeth, both natural and prosthetic
  • Attend your semi-annual dental checkups
  • Limit your consumption of hard or crunchy foods, as this will prevent wear on your crowns
  • Don’t smoke
  • Drink alcohol in moderation

If you’re considering investing in dental implants, be sure to educate yourself on their proper care and usage first. Following these tips can help you keep them looking and feeling great for many years to come.
