Dentists always strive to preserve every natural tooth; however, sometimes extractions are necessary. If your teeth are too badly damaged to repair or it’s more cost-effective to replace them with dentures, you’ll need tooth extractions. Your mouth must be healed before you can get your new teeth. Here’s how long you must wait before you can get your dentures after your teeth are removed.
Type of Tooth Extraction
The timeline for recovery differs for everyone. The type of tooth extraction you have can also affect your recovery. Depending on your situation, you’ll require:
- Simple Extraction: When a tooth is fully visible about the gum line, a simple extraction can be used. Your dentist will use special instruments to loosen your tooth before using forceps to extract it. Simple extractions generally have a shorter recovery than surgical removal.
- Surgical Tooth Extraction: If a tooth is partially or fully hidden below the gums, it will need to be surgically removed. An oral surgeon will open your gum tissue to gain access to your tooth. They may break it into smaller pieces before removing it. Your gums will be sutured closed for proper healing.
Recovering from Tooth Extractions
Typically, you must wait at least 6 to 8 weeks after having your teeth removed before getting your final dentures. Your dentist may fit you with temporary prosthetics. However, they will not fit as well as your final set.
As your mouth heals, your gums and jawbone will change shape. Once you have recovered from your extractions, your dentist will begin the process of creating your final dentures. They will capture an impression of your mouth to create a wax mockup of your new teeth. After a series of adjustments to ensure your dentures fit comfortably, the dental lab will fabricate your new teeth.
Immediate Dentures
Some patients can benefit from immediate dentures, which you’ll receive on the same day as your tooth extractions. They’ll act like Band-Aids for your healing gums. You’ll require regular adjustments as your mouth heals to ensure a snug fit.
Your dentist will explain exactly how long you can expect the process to take during your consultation. You can ensure a quick recovery after your tooth extractions by following your dentist’s aftercare instructions.
